Our Journey + A History of Red Lodge

The origins of Hotel Expedition and the town we call home!

Before 1884

The area was part of the Crow Indian Reservation, a place of hunting, resting, and worship for the Crow Indians. After treaties allowed for settlement, the town was officially established in 1884, and coal mining became its main industry.

1887

The Rocky Fork Coal Company opened the first mine in 1887, sparking a boom that drew hundreds of immigrants from Scandinavia, Italy, the British Isles, and Eastern Europe.

1897

The town and its hotels attracted famous and infamous figures. The Sundance Kid robbed the Red Lodge Bank in 1897. Calamity Jane and Buffalo Bill Cody were also frequent visitors.

1915

The coal mining boom brought the population to an all time high of approximately 6,000 people around 1915. This period saw the construction of new infrastructure and development. Red Lodge had 20 saloons, and its reputation for being a rowdy place is reflected in its history of violence and lawlessness.

1932

The Great Depression brought hard times and the last coal mine closed in 1932, ending the town’s mining era

1935

After the coal mines closed, tourism became a new source of income starting with the opening of the Beartooth Scenic Highway in the mid-1930s

1960

In 1960, Grizzly Peak officially opened with one chair life and three runs. Over the next few years, the ski area continued to grow with new lifts. Work started to spread that Red Lodge was no longer just an old mining town in the back country, but it was an awesome place to ski. In the mid 60’s Grizzly Peak changed its name to Red Lodge Mountain.

1994

As the years went by, Red Lodge Mountain continued to grow in both popularity and in size. In 1994 Red Lodge Mountain purchased Red Lodge Golf Course to complement their great ski season. This 18-hole championship golf course made it possible for Red Lodge Mountain to take the next step by becoming a year-round Resort.

2025

In 2025, the Clark family decided to take a chance on a small Montana town. Breathing new life into an old inn and giving birth to The Hotel Expedition. They hope you, your family and generations to come visiting Red Lodge will make your own history.
